Line & Leader Fundamentals

• Intermediate level + high summer water means you need easy roll-casting and controlled turnover for dry flies when flows are fast and current is pushing.
• Trout on small streams in 50–65°F calls for light, quick-drying presentations—your bottleneck is usually wind/current control, not fly choice.
• For dry fly fishing, default to a thin diameter leader and realistic tippet diameter so the tippet doesn’t spook fish or drag the fly.

Pro Tips

1. High water = manage drag first. Keep the fly drifting naturally; don’t “reach” with the rod—let current do the work.
