How To Design Your Tool

How to Design a Product Advising Tool
  1. Establish the Product you want to assist people with purchasing.
    1. It can be most anything!
    2. But it's best to think of items that require research before purchase.
    3. Or, items that have many variations, models, or features.
    4. Users of your tool want not only to find the product that fits their exact scenario, but they also want a real expert recommendation as well.
  2. Establish the name of the tool.
  3. Write out every variable that influences the product that will fit them best.
    1. These are the input fields.
    2. Really think about this!
    3. This is important as only an expert, or someone with knowledge of this tools theme, would know every possible variable that would influence the decision. This is key to keeping our tools high quality and very personalized to the user.
    4. Also consider the type of input field that would make the most sense for that variable.
    5. Multi select options, text box area, dropdown style single select, checkboxes, number field, slider, etc.
  4. With this consideration, now also determine the options that the user would need to select. Best to go very detailed here.‍
    1. We will mostly know what we should use here so don't stress over it!
  5. Most Important part:
    1. Consider as many combinations and user scenarios as you can.
    2. layer in your personal expert advice, and list out products that you would personally recommend based on as many input combinations as you can.
    3. Ex) if user selects X (or X and A and B etc.) always recommend Y (or define in some way how we should continue)
    4. In some cases, we may not need intense amounts of logic, and we will do our part in constructing this as well.‍
    5. DO NOT stress over this, we are here to help you and make this as easy as possible for you!‍
  6. Define what you want the output to look like.
    1. What should the tool produce?
    2. We default to 3-5 product recommendations, plus detailed reasoning behind every reccomendation.
  7. Lastly, if you want the tool to have a specific persona we can get creative and layer in a personalized tone. Want it to sound like the way you speak? we can do that. Want it to talk like a pirate? we can do that too.

‍

  • We are actively improving our product advising tools!
  • Primary limitations include:
    • Missing recent or brand new products that have recently been released, we may not have the information to include those products in recommendations, but we update as often as we can.
  • Price variations: We cannot guarantee the product that is recommended will be the exact price that we stated. So always navigate to the recommend product link(s) to check the current price.
  • If we are provided a precise list of products and prices we can then incorporate the tool to fetch that data and layer it into the tools output.
  • We will soon incorporate API's, like through Amazon, that will allow for dynamic product and live price fetching.
  • In the future we can do this with specific brands API access as well as we work to upgrade our system in the near future.
