How To Design Your Tool

How to Design an Informational Tool
  • Establish the Idea.
    • What question are we answering, or what task are we assisting with.
  • Establish the name of the tool.
  • Write out every variable that influences the answer or desired output.
    • These are the input fields.
    • Really think about this!
      • This is important as only an expert or someone with knowledge of this tools theme would know every possible variable that would influence the decision. This is key to keeping our tools high quality.
    • Also consider the type of input field that would make the most sense for that variable.
      • Multi select options, text box area, dropdown style single select, checkboxes, number field, slider, etc.
      • With this consideration, now also determine the options that the user would need to select. Best to go very detailed here.
      • We will mostly know what we should use here so don't stress over it!
  • Most Important part:
    • Consider as many combinations and user scenarios as you can
    • layer in your personal expertise by defining the required output that should be the result of those selected options.
    • Ex) if user selects X (or X and A and B etc.) always recommend Y (or define in some way how we should continue)
    • In some cases, we may not need intense amounts of logic, and we will do our part in constructing this as well.
    • DO NOT stress over this as well, we are here to help you and make this as easy as possible for you!
  • Define what you want the output to look like
    • What should the tool produce
      • A detailed write-up (what sections should we have), a chart or table, a simple numerical value, etc.
      • We default to producing a fairly detailed output for most tools, and given you already know the tool you're designing you should already have a good idea of what the output should look like.
  • Lastly, if you want the tool to have a specific persona we can get creative and layer in a personalized tone. Want it to sound like the way you speak? we can do that? Want it to talk like a pirate? we can do that too.

‍

Make sure you go through all of this information and provide everything as detailed as possible in an email or form submission.

Like stated previously, don't stress over this process, we will help you! Once you build a tool or two, you'll be able to construct one in no time!

  • Can anyone submit their tool ideas?
    • Yes! We give anybody unlimited access to submissions and ideas for informational tools, no matter how simple or complex your tool may be.
    • Helping you, helps us. This is a mutually beneficial collaboration opportunity.
  • How long does it take for my tool to be built?
    • Short answer: it depends
    • From the time we open your request and begin tool building, as long as we have all of the necessary information we can build it and publish it within the day.
    • However, we often need additional information from you, so we may take longer to publish given the time it takes to communicate via email or DM.
    • Be sure to reference the checklists so you know all of the information you need to provide for your tools to be made as quickly as possible.
  • Can I share my tools on other websites and social media?
    • YES!!! Brag about them, link to them, talk about them to your audience. This is how not only you benefit, but we do too!
  • Is there a limit to how many tools i can design?
    • There is no limit! We want as many contributor made tools on our platform as possible!
  • Let your imagination fly!
    • be creative and think of questions or challenges that are difficult to answer with typical research efforts. Our tool model allows us to build some very cool and highly capable tools that go way beyond just answering questions. We can do complex calculations, comparison engines, demonstrate physical effects, generate charts and tables, and more. There really is no limit to what we can do, and it will only get better!
    • Or, think of new and innovative tools that can assist the user with certain tasks. Ex) Our "Complete Bass Fishing Tournament Day Decision System" tool gives the user a complex breakdown and precise thought process to approach a bass fishing tournament, all based on the users exact conditions, patterns, skills, and goals with an intenese layer of backend logic built by the creator of the tool
  • Ultimately, try to design something that YOU have expertise in, and know can help answer a difficult question or problem, or assist with a task in your field of interest.
  • Designing these purely informational tools come with amazing opportunity to share your knowledge with the world.
    • Especially for industry professionals.
    • If you are seeking a career, or want to establish your authority and expertise in the space, creating these valuable resources is an amzing way to do so.
    • You never know, millions may use your tool and see your face, profile page, and social media accounts.
    • We give you free access to infitite potential for exposure and growth!
  • Like product advising tools, their is real opportunity to create something that is valuable. A tool with real professional expertise layered in can be viral and highly shared across the internet over time.
  • In the future, we plan to incorporate incentive programs that reward creators for designing highly succesful tools. Stay active with us, and keep eyes and ears open, for information once this develops.

  • We can do almost anything in regards to generating text, charts, tables, calculations.
  • The current primary limit with our tools is generating imagery and needing access to other forms of dynamic data.
    • For example, say you want to make a tool that incorporates live weather data, we would need to alter the backend code and gain access to another sources API to allow for the fetching of that information. comes with not only the process of redesigning our tool system, but taking on additional costs as well.
    • In the future we will incorporate this and upgrade our system to produce imagery and better visual output capabilities.
  • The primary reasoning for this is budget and keeping our tools free to use during this stage in growth.
"This platform is built on the opportunity for content creators to not only increase their earning potential, but drastically increase their outreach, audience, network, and business funnel. Our mission is to be the key resource for outdoor content creators to maximize their potential to do what they love for a living." - Jacob P. Owner of The Tool Collective
